The Kodokan 1894 “Golden Scroll”
With the cooperation of: Kodokan Judo Institute
Today I’m trying something new. I recently gave a presentation at Tsukuba University for the Jigoro Kano Education Conference, part of the Tsukuba Science Week 2026, on the 1894 Kodokan Golden Scroll, written by Kanō shihan to explain how the ultimate goals of judo were to be accomplished. Judo’s HOW. Then I made a bilingual English / Japanese video version of the presentation with captions in both languages.
So check out the video below! I’ll soon finish a full paper on the topic to be published. I’d love to hear your thoughts, questions, or any historical references you might have on Meiji-era primary sources like this.
Hanging originally in the Dai Dojo at Shimotomizaka and later Suidobashi, this 2×1 meter golden gilt scroll survived the 1945 firebombing of the Kodokan and today is displayed in the Shihan’s Room in the Museum. Written in Kanbun (classical Sino-Japanese prose) and drawing on both the latest Western ethics and 2,500-year-old Confucian concepts, it was Kanō shihan’s explicit message to parents and society on how judo builds individuals of stature and civic value.

You can leave a comment above, ask a question I may be able to answer in my essay, or point out errors (all mine!).
You can subscribe below for updates to this website, which will include a notification that will be sent out when I post or refer to the long essay that describes the Golden Scroll, its background, and its importance in Kanō shihan’s approach to jūdō training and its ultimate objective. We’ll never sell your data.
Regards,
